Impact of Trump’s Tariffs, Rupiah Estimated at Rp16,800 per US Dollar

Jakarta – The rupiah is expected to move in the range of Rp16,800 per US dollar (US) at the opening of trading today (8/4) and strengthen at the level of Rp16,700 at the close of trading.

Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra explained that the Indonesian financial market, which has just opened today after the Lebaran holiday, will respond negatively to news that appears mainly related to the announcement of President Donald Trump’s new import tariffs which get retaliation from several countries such as China and Canada.

“So it is possible that the rupiah will move at Rp16,800 in early trading and could close stronger at the end of trading today around Rp16,700 per US dollar,” Ariston said when contacted by Infobanknews, Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

As based on data from Bloomberg at 09.03 rupiah was at the level of Rp16,842 per US dollar or weakened 0.12 percent.

Ariston explained, Asian stock markets this morning experienced a rebound. This means that many investors are taking advantage of the moment of sharply declining prices in various stock markets.

“With the hope that in the future the market will rise again. This sentiment can be positive and can withstand the weakening of the rupiah today,” he explained. However, despite today’s buy on dip market action that could provide positive sentiment to risky assets, the market is still vulnerable to pressure this week due to the issue of tariff wars that are still rolling and the market is waiting for the results of tariff negotiations for several countries.
